Description
Kaikoura, on the South Island of New Zealand is famous for mammal encounters: whales, fur seals, dolphins. You can take boat trips to view the whales and you are guaranteed to see them since there is a resident pod of sperm whales in the vicinity. You can do boat trips to view or even swim with the seals or dolphins. If staying on land and staying dry is your thing, you can watch fur seals sleeping at Point Kean where the fur seals are snoozing all over the rocky tidal shoreline. Despite the cute napping, seals are wild animals and observers are warned to stay back at least 10 m from the seals. One has to wonder what happened to prompt the sign warning “…do not attempt to touch or MOVE a seal. Seals are wild animals and can bite causing serious injury.” (emphasis mine) Was someone trying to get a selfie with a seal?
