Description
When the New Zealand pigeon flies overhead, you want to duck for cover! Most websites don’t make much of the sound of a New Zealand pigeon in flight other than that the beat of its wings is ‘noisy’ and ‘distinctive’, but that is an understatement. If you were a foley artist, you could amplify the sound a bit and you’d have the sound of a helicopter’s rotor right overhead! The New Zealand pigeon weighs 19-30 oz (550-850 g) and 20 in (51 cm) in length, making it one of the larger birds in New Zealand. The head, throat and wings are generally a shiny green-purple colour, but with a bronze tinge to the feathers. The breast is typically white and the bill red with an orange-ish tip. The feet and eyes are red.
