Description
This hike on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand just wasn’t meant to happen. First, there were some major road closures on the way to the trail head, and since there aren’t that many roads to begin with, the detours were long. Then, as we neared the parking area on a hilltop, we noticed that the fog seemed to be hanging over the tree tops. But we had started the drive…so we doggedly persevered. Sure enough, the fog obscured any view from the parking area so things weren’t looking hopeful. Not one to give up, I figured we were there, why not hike anyway? We got on all our rain gear and took off. The trail was muddy from days and days of rain and drizzle so we jumped from one less wet and muddy area to another trying not to soak our boots and be in mud up to our ankles. But we hadn’t figured on the sheep. They were everywhere, and not fenced in. OK, that’s fine, except they ‘did their business’ everywhere… including on the trail. So we not only had to dodge the water and deep mud, we also had to dodge sheep leavings. You couldn’t look up for a moment if you didn’t want to step in ankle-deep mud or some other greenish ‘stuff’. We could hear the ocean but in the heavy fog, the sound seemed all around us so we couldn’t judge for sure which way to go to get to the coast. It didn’t help that the trail markers were few and far between, and not visible one t the next. I had visions of wandering in the pasture, getting lost in the fog! This path leading to the shed was the most scenic thing we saw on the trail that day, and it was very atmospheric in the fog! We figured it was a sheep shearing station or other ranch building but on this day it was deserted. The end of the story: We ended up turning around as the weather and visibility remained poor. We didn’t get lost and wander the moors all night. We did end up having a big job cleaning (scrubbing) our boots afterwards. We did return on a gloriously sunny day to enjoy what we missed the first time around!
