Description
The day in Avila quickly and repeatedly cycled through periods of rain, clouds and sun. In the moments when the clouds cleared, the sunlight on the old town walls was glorious and invited photographing! This section of the old medieval walls is very scenic, having a long sloping and rock-filled hill in the foreground called Teso del Carmen. The Puerta del Carmen is in the distance. Avila is notable for having complete and prominent medieval town walls, built in the Romanesque style. The walls were begun in 1090 and constructed during the 11th-14 centuries. They enclose an area of 31 hectares (77 acres) and have a perimeter of 2516 m (2752 yds) You can walk along the tops of the walls for perhaps 60% of the circumference, giving wonderful views of the town within and the countryside outside. Avila has been described as perhaps the most 16th-century town in Spain, and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Stunning perspective, Joan. The correspondence of the stone walls and the large stones in the foreground is great. f/l
