Description
Inspiring many a writer, artist and photographer, and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, Notre Dame Cathedral sits alongside the Seine River on the Ile de la Cite in Paris France. At night, it glows gently and beckons lovers to stroll along the quays. The tourists may rule in the plaza above, but...amazingly... just a few steps down to the quay and you lose most of the crowds. Notre Dame is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and was essentially complete by 1345. It was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress. The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave but after the construction began and the thinner walls grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued the pattern. It was described in 1323 (in part) as follows: 'That most terrible church of the most glorious Virgin Mary, mother of God, deservedly shines out, like the sun among stars.' Few would argue that it still stands out like the sun among stars!
