Description
We came to Nugget Point Lighthouse one afternoon when the weather was cloudy so when the sun came out the next day we made a return trip! Nugget Point Lighthouse is located on the south coast of the South Island of New Zealand, in a zone called the ‘Roaring 40s’, meaning the wind blows unmercifully! I can attest that I had difficulty holding still enough to even take a photo! Nugget Point is one of the New Zealand’s oldest lighthouses, perched above the famous rocks named by Captain Cook because they looked like pieces of gold. If the wind is blowing and the sea is high, it is mesmerizing to just watch the sea crashing over the rocks. The lighthouse was built in 1869 and started operating on 4 July 1870. The tower was constructed from locally quarried stone and stands 76 metres (249 ft) above the water. Originally powered by an oil burner, it was converted to a 1000 W lamp in 1949 with electricity provided by a diesel generator until the 1960s, when the lighthouse was connected to mains electricity. It was automated in 1989 and is computer-monitored and operated by Maritime New Zealand. Nugget Point is home to many seabirds including penguins, gannets and royal spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. If you tire of looking at the lighthouse and the rocks, you can search the coast below for these creatures!

Nice picture, Joan. The weather can be a trick. I've been to San Marino but saw absolutely nothing because of the dense fog. Unfortunately I couldn't stay or come back ... and no photos.
