Description
This is the black and white version of the image called Big Red. This is the photo that almost wasn't! Even though it is early morning and there is no one around, and I am not blocking any traffic on the sidewalk or the street, I was told I couldn't 'set up shop' with my tripod for taking pictures! I explained that I would only be 5 minutes. I only had the tripod because it wasn't light enough yet to do without it. So....I just worked quickly, took my photos, and moved along down the block. How could I not get a photo of this magnificent building!? This is the original courthouse of Dallas County in Dallas TX. Built in 1890, Old Red was made of huge blocks of gray granite and red sandstone from Arkansas and Pecos, Texas. Authentic architectural elements display a magnificent piece of Dallas County history. The 90' clock tower serves as a beacon. The building features a grand staircase restored to its original 1890 appearance, more than 100 stained glass windows, and "acroteria/wyverns". These are four decorative creatures atop the Old Red Museum in the shape of wyverns (from the Latin word for serpent). There were originally six courtrooms. today the Hatton W Sumners Restored Courtroom on the fourth floor stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and detail of the 1892 courthouse. Fully restored, it contains an elaborate judge's bench, bench, jury box and gallery seating. Today it is the Old Red Museum, serving as a showcase of the history of Dallas.

Magnificent building. Looks like an Old World castle! Hard to believe it's in Dallas. Congratulations on the recent sale.

Maybe the academy for Harry Potter. These old structures always look spooky. Congrats on your sale.
