Description
Returning to Lisbon Portugal from Sintra, we took the train to Gare do Oriente train station even though it was much farther from our B&B than was Rossio. But, the station is built by Santiago Calatrava so it's well worth the visit! It is constructed with a roof of glass and steel made to look like a row of trees. Gare do Oriente is one of the main transport hubs in Lisbon. encompassing a Lisbon Metro station, a high-speed, commuter and regional train hub, a local, national and international bus station, a shopping centre and a police station. It was finished in 1998 for the Expo '98 world's fair in Parque das Nacoes, where it is located. The Gare do Oriente is Portugal's busiest station (combined bus, train and metro), handling more passengers than New York's Grand Central Station. It doesn't hurt that it is across the street from the Vasco De Gama shopping center, where I replaced my aging backpack with a great new one!
