Description

Like many Italian towns, the Piazza del Duomo is a focal point in Orivieto Italy. Early morning is one of the best times to appreciate the architecture and imagine the history. The façade of the cathedral, seen in part on the right dwarfs the rest of the buildings. Star of David and other mosaics line the cobbled piazza in front of the cathedral. In the distance, the Maurizio Tower rises with a simple clock face and a bell and bell ringer silhouetted on top of the tower on stilt legs. There are also two smaller bells also on stilt legs. The bell ringer is Maurizio. All information that I read said that this 600 year old clock and bell ringer were fully operational, ringing the bell very precisely every hour on the hour. Maybe that’s true, but during my visit Maruizio was evidently on a winter holiday.
