Description
Our Lady of Regio sanctuary in Vernazza in the Cinque Terre region of Italy became a real sanctuary on the day that I visited. It was a cloudy day for hiking but a couple hours into the hike, it started raining. Luckily, I was about 20 minutes from this chapel, which was going to be a stopping point anyway. Even so, I was quite wet by the time I arrived and watched out the door as a full blown storm rolled through. It was nearly pitch dark in the church with the only light being some lights around the altar and the dim daylight from the open door. I spend the first few minutes drying off, adding some extra layers for warmth, and looking out the door to see when the storm might pass. Then I realized…I should be taking some photos! It was a most amazing hour spent in this sanctuary. The storm raged, I wandered around in the near darkness, took some photos. The solitude was quite intense. The sanctuary was built in the XI century on a preexisting crypt. The first written mention dates back to 1248. The Black Madonna with Child is the adored image over the altar.
