On a drive from Moab Utah to Monument Valley Utah, I made a detour to Natural Bridges National Monument. It’s a place where one could spend at least a day hiking but in my short stop I had to content myself with short walks to overlook points around the scenic drive. Owachomo Bridge is the smallest of three major bridges in the park with a height of 106 feet and a span of 180 feet. This seems surprising when you are standing under the arch but the easy accessibility of the bridge from the carpark probably accounts for this illusion. Owachomo means "rock mound" in Hopi and is named after the rock formation on top of the east end of the bridge. Natural Bridges National Monument is located about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the Four Corners boundary of southeast Utah, In 1904, the National Geographic Magazine publicized the bridges and the area was designated a National Monument April 16, 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. It is Utah's first National Monument.
