Description
This is only one entranceway to the jaw-dropping Palais de Justice in Brussels Belgium. As you wander through the hallways (probably looking for the bathroom) you cannot help but be amazed at the immensity of the building. The Palais de Justice in Brussels dominates the Brussels skyline, sitting as it does on the hill of the Upper Town. In addition, its dome rises to 340 feet, higher than that of St Peter's in Rome. The Law Courts of Brussels or Brussels Palace of Justice is the most important Court building in Belgium, and is a notable landmark of Brussels. It was built at the time of King Leopold II, between 1866 and 1883, and it epitomizes the showy grandeur of his reign. Leopold became obscenely wealthy by turning Africa's Congo region into his personal colony. He spent much of wealth expanding and beautifying the city of Brussels. the Palais de Justice is the biggest building constructed in the 19th century. The building is currently 160 by 150 meters,[1] and has a total built ground surface of 26,000 m. The 104[7] meter high dome weighs 24,000 tons. The building has 8 courtyards with a surface of 6000 m, 27 large court rooms and 245 smaller court rooms and other rooms. Situated on a hill, there is a level difference of 20 meters between the upper and lower town, which results in multiple entrances to the building at different levels.
