Description
This is the kind of place where the term 'flash flood' really comes to mind. Although it was hot, dusty and dry on this early summer day, in your mind you can just picture a wall of water coming down the arroyo and sweeping you away! It wasn't likely on that day in Palo Duro Canyon (part of Palo Duro State Park) hiking out to LighthouseFriends.com Rock but sometimes your imagination takes over especially if you are hiking alone with no one else in sight! I didn't appreciate the clouds at the time but several hours later on my way back from Lighthouse Rock I think I would have given anything for some clouds and another bottle of water! You wonder how anyone survived in these areas 'back in the day'. Palo Duro Canyon, located near Amarillo TX is the biggest canyon no one has heard of and the second largest canyon in the country after the Grand Canyon. The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors. I am thankful today for the investment made by the government over 80 years ago to preserve this wonderful treasure and make it accessible to us nearly a century later.
