Description
If you really just want to do a drive by and say you had 'done' Palo Duro Canyon, all you have to do is go to the overlook at the Vistors' Center. The view is spectacular but, you just don't get a feel for it unless you get down and dirty and sweaty on one or more of the hikes! Palo Duro Canyon is the biggest canyon no one has heard of and the second largest canyon in the country next to the Grand Canyon. It's located near the Texas panhandle city of Amarillo. The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors. I am thankful today for the investment made by the government over 80 years ago to preserve this wonderful treasure and make it accessible to us nearly a century later.
