I never knew Fort Worth was called Panther City. There is a women's soccer team called the Fort Worth Panthers, and the Fort Worth baseball team is called the Cats (formerly the Panthers). There is Panther Island in the Trinity River near downtown. And Paschal High School in Fort Worth are the Panthers. I never knew, or wondered, why! I guess if you live someplace long enough you find out. I was walking through downtown Fort Worth and came upon this fountain that was put up in 2002. (Notice that someone has put socks on the statue!) The accompanying plaque reads: "Panther City Fountain, 2002. The wit and imagination of the citizens of Fort Worth in the early 19th century have been perpetuated in the nickname of Fort Worth as the "Panther City". A newspaper story reported that Fort Worth was such a dull and drowsy place that a panther was seen sleeping in the city on the steps by the courthouse.
