Description
The metro station at the Cite station on the Ile de la Cite in Paris France was opened in December 1910 and is the only metro station on the island. The station retains its beautiful art nouveau entrance signs from the early days of the metro system. The Parisian architect and designer Hector Guimard was commissioned not only to mark an entry to the new Paris Metro, but also to help make this new mode of transportation appealing to Parisians. The signs are designed in the Art Nouveau style, an international style of decoration and architecture in the 1880s and 1890s that drew inspiration from nature and natural forms. The Cite sign was one of two original designs. This one is the simpler version where the 'Metropolitain' sign was held between two ornate, sinuously curved lampposts designed in the form of plant stems. This blend of design, architecture, and advertisement was important to modern ideas.
