Description
This version of the Parker County Courthouse in Weatherford TX shows the north face of the building. The photo entitled "Parker County Courthouse" shows the west face. This is another of north central Texas' lovely historic courthouses. Parker County's first courthouse was built of rough pine lumber in 1856. It was replaced with a brick one in 1858. It was destroyed by fire in 1874, and the loss of county records caused great inconveniences for years to come. In 1878, the cornerstone was laid for a stone structure that too was burned down in a suspected arson. The fourth and present courthouse was completed in 1886 at a cost of $55,555,55! The Seth Thomas Clock was installed in 1897 for $957. The Courthouse has recently been restored on the inside to bring back its classic beauty and original splendor from the turn of the century. It is constructed in the Second Empire style, so named for the architectural elements in vogue during the era of the Second French Empire. Hopefully, funds will be raised/allocated to repair the clock since as you can tell, dawn does not fall at 12:20! Weatherford complied with the state's legal request that county seats be located 'within' five miles of the county's geographic center by putting the courthouse on the exact center and even celebrating the spot with a decorative floor. The Parker County Courthouse closely resembles the ones in Coryell, Denton, Hill, Hood and Lampasas counties. All were works of W. C. Dodson. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1971.
