Description
It was as hot as it looks while out hiking in the desert at the Petroglyph National Monument even though it was only late spring, several weeks short of summer. At the Piedras Marcadas Canyon hike, you can see up to 400 petroglyphs carved into the dark basalt rocks. These rocks are volcanic remnants. Petroglyph National Monument protects one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America, featuring designs and symbols carved onto volcanic rocks by Native Americans and Spanish settlers 400 to 700 years ago. These images are a valuable record of cultural expression and hold profound spiritual significance for contemporary Native Americans and for the descendants of the early Spanish settlers. The park closely abuts the western boundary of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
