Description
Philip IV looks wistfully at the moon in the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid Spain. This is a very interesting statue, as it is the first horse statue in the world to be held up solely on its two hind legs, with a little discrete help from the tail. According to tradition, the Italian sculptor, Pietro Tacca, was advised by the mathematical physicist Galileo in order to accomplish this feat. Galileo suggested that the rear of the sculpture be made solid while the front remain hollow. Otherwise the sculpture would be in danger of falling over. This was a pioneering work at the time. But the tourist simply marvels at the artistic quality! This statue is located in the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid, Plaza de Oriente is a very popular place with visitors to the city, as well as with local people. Any visit to Madrid should not be considered complete without a trip to this grand spacious plaza just to the east of the Royal Palace and a short walk from other central sites in Madrid.
