Description
Like many Italian towns, Orvieto Italy has its own Piazza del Duomo, which owes its existence to the cathedral or Duomo. Dawn is often the best time to freely explore around the piazza. On the left is part of the cathedral’s façade, showing the famous 14th century bas-reliefs on the pillars. The piazza is cobbled, and around the periphery of the Duomo are mosaics of the Star of David and other symbols. In the center sits the Church of San Giacomo all’Ospedale, where a hospice for poor people and pilgrims was established here in 1187. It later developed to become the civic hospital. As is true with many older structures, it went through several changes in form and function and is now no longer a church but is used for exhibitions and events.
