Description
It would not be too far from the truth to say that I was out early on a winter morning in Orvieto Italy hoping to find someplace open for coffee! There were few others about, some workers catching the bus at the far size of the piazza, the street cleaners and trash collectors, a few joggers. And me. I found my cappuccino at the shop on the right, to fuel me enough for some blue hour photos! Like many Italian towns, the Piazza del Duomo is a focal point, owing its existence to the cathedral or Duomo. On the left is part of the cathedral’s façade, showing the famous 14th century bas-reliefs on the pillars. The piazza is cobbled, and around the periphery of the Duomo are mosaics of the Star of David and other symbols. In the center sits the Church of San Giacomo all’Ospedale, where a hospice for poor people and pilgrims was established here in 1187. It later developed to become the civic hospital but is now used for exhibitions and events. And like in many other European cities, the cathedral is in close proximity to the community.
