Description
Daylight comes late to Orvieto Italy in January. There were few others about in the Piazza del Duomo, some workers catching a bus, the street cleaners and trash collectors, a few joggers. And me. Like many Italian towns, the Piazza del Duomo is a focal point, owing its existence to the cathedral or Duomo. On the right is part of the cathedral’s façade, with the Star of David and other mosaics in front in the cobbled piazza. The Maurizio Tower rises in the center with a simple clock face and a bell and bell ringer that stand on top of the tower on stilt legs and flanked by a pair of two smaller bells, also on stilt legs. The bell ringer is Maurizio. All information that I read said that this 600 year old clock and bell ringer were fully operational, ringing the bell very precisely every hour on the hour. Maybe that’s true, but during my visit Maruizio was evidently on a winter holiday.
