I read that the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro was one of the main historic touristic sights in Lucca Italy so I decided to look for a place to say nearby. Luckily, I found a place just on the outside of this historic open piazza and I could walk through it and by it several times a day in all lighting conditions. While at night it might be lively with all the open cafes, by far my favorite time was the early morning just as the sun was coming up over the edges of the buildings to the east. It was the awakening of a brand-new day! But in the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, things weren’t so sunny. It was here that gladiators battled in front of up to 10,000 spectators in 18 rows of seats of an open amphitheater so it was an important site of entertainment and games of strength. In the sixth century, many buildings were built with the crumbling remains of the theater. The piazza took on its current form between 1830 and 1839, when architect Lorenzo Nottolini (who also designed the aquaduct and some of the city’s fountains) demolished some of the buildings crowding the inside of the arena and restored its structure by using the original elliptical plan. The base of the amphitheater is now buried about nine feet below the center, and the remaining vaults and arches have been incorporated into the modern shops, cafes, and houses that circle the plaza. Indeed, on the outside of the structure, it is easy to find some of the ancient remains incorporated into the modern walls.
