Description
This pied-billed grebe was seen at sunrise in the marshes alongside the Trinity River in Fort Worth TX. These swimming birds are small and chunky, with compact bodies, slender necks, and short, thick bills. In summer, their bills are encircled with a black band, hence their name. They can adjust their buoyancy to float with just the upper half of the head above the water. They catch small fish and invertebrates by diving or simply slowly submerging. They build floating nests of cattails, grasses, and other vegetation.
