Description
This is part of the architecture of the Placa del Rei (the King Square) in Barcelona. This is the Royal Palace's church, the 14th century Chapel of Saint Agatha which sits atop the foundations of a Roman wall. This square is said to be the most handsome section of ancient Barcelona, the Barri Gotic. It is a square outlined by gothic buildings topped by the facade of the former main Royal Palace and its watchtower. Plaa del Rei is known for its link to Christopher Columbus. It is widely believed that it was on these steps fanning out from the corner of the square that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella greeted Columbus when he arrived home from his first voyage to the New World. Some dispute the story, noting that the royal couple was probably at their summer residence when the explorer returned, but most locals stick to this story when chatting with visitors as to the area's historic significance.

this is a great capture - shading, light and dark contrasts, lots of different angles, the steps lead the eye right into the image
