Description
Point Cabrillo Light occupies a somewhat lonely but spectacular headland extending out into the Pacific Ocean near Mendocino California. Despite the appearance of simply being an historic site, it is an active duty Aid to Navigation, containing the original Chance Brothers classic 3rd order Fresnel lens made in England and shipped to California via Cape Horn. The light is only 32 feet (9.8 m) above the ground, but because of the height of the headlands it stands 81 feet (25 m) above sea level. It has been a federal aid to navigation since 1909. Today, it is part of the California state park system as Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park. The original keeper’s cottages have been restored and are available for rentals.
