Description
Ornate, elegant, grandiose, sumptuous and extravagant. These are only some of the terms used to describe the Pont Alexandre III in Paris! Gilt bronze statues of winged horses representing the illustrious Arts, Sciences, Commerce and Industry sit atop short plinths at each end of the bridge and Nymphs adorn the center of the bridge's arch (see here from the side). Art Nouveau lamps complete the structure. It was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle (universal exhibition) World's Fair. Pont Alexandre III connects the Invalides on the Left Bank to the Grand Palais and Petit Palais on the Right Bank. From the bridge you can enjoy a sweeping view of these buildings as well as the Eiffel Tower and the Seine, which makes it a popular place for a stroll at any time of day or night. It is classified as a French Monument historique.
