Description
Ponte Sant'Angelo (Bridge of the Holy Angel) might be the perfect amalgam of ancient history and modern day life. As a piece of ancient history, it is a scenic bridge over the Tiber River in Rome, Italy, originally built in 134 AD and topped with statues of angels that were added in the 15th and 16th centuries. Viewed from afar it is probably the most beautiful and romantic bridge in Rome. Up close….well, as a solely pedestrian bridge, it is plagued with young men hawking cheap souvenirs and you are lucky to make it across without being accosted at least once! I tried to ignore the modern-day commerce and focus on the architecture! The ten statues that adorn the bridge today were designed in 1668 by the great sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini on the order of pope Clement IX. The angels all hold a symbol of the crucifixion of Jesus, such as a crown of thorns, a whip, and so on. Seen in the foreground in the Angel with the Garment and Dice, while in the background is the Angel with the Cross.
