Just a five-minute ferry ride from the town of Portovenere in the Cinque Terre region of Italy is Isola Palmaria, one of a trio of small islands just off the mainland. It is sparsely populated, in part by the military. It does have some great hiking paths that circle the entire island. Depending on whether you hike clockwise or counterclockwise around the circuit, this elevated view of Portovenere occurs either at the end or beginning, respectively, of your hike. We experienced it toward the end of our hike and it felt like a great reward! Portovenere is a medieval fishing village situated just south of the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. This charming village can be reached from the Cinque Terre by boat or from La Spezia by boat or by bus from the train station. The colorful seven- and eight-story harbor-front houses are a natural attraction. In 1997 Portovenere, the trio of nearby islands, and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
