I had been thinking about the hike from Riomaggiore to Portovenere in the Cinque Terre region of Italy for an entire year! I had heard the previous year that the hike was a beautiful one and I was determined to make it. However, the weather forecast for a solid week was for rain! So I started the 14k hike with more hope than warranted! But I was lucky. The hike has beautiful views of the Mediterranean coastline for much of the way and as you near the end, there are enticing views of Portovenere (bottom, center) and over to the gulf of La Spezia (upper left) from high above the town. It was soon after this that I felt the first raindrops, and then barely had time to get out my pack cover and put my camera away before the rain came down hard!
