Description
The first thing that struck me about the Potter County Courthouse in Amarillo TX was how pristine a condition the stonework seemed to be. The historical landmark sign said it was built in 1930-32, yet it was so clean that it looked like it was just completed last year! I walked all around, looking for some sign indicating that it was newer than 1932 but never did find one. This is the fifth courthouse for Potter County, built in an art deco style. It exhibits 'stepped massing from its entrance pavilion to the top of the tower, and skillful use of details that include ornamental figural and botanical bas relief, symmetrical pilasters and metal casement wondows.' It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 22, 1996. It has been replaced by the present courthouse built between 1984-6.
