Sgraffito seems to be all over in Prague and once you see it on one of the more famous buildings, you start to see it everywhere! This lovely example was on a side street, and was not one of the more well-know examples that you read about in the tour books. Still, to me it was a lovely example, having beautiful flowing lines that were in contrast to the starkly geometric designs seen on e.g., the Schwarzenberg Palace. Sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare ("to scratch") and might be considered an early form of graffiti! Sgraffito is a type of decoration done by covering a surface, as of plaster or enamel, of one color, with a thin coat of a similar material of another color, and then scratching or scoring through the outer coat to show the color beneath. Sgraffito on walls has been used in Europe since classical times, and it was common in Italy in the 16th century. In combination with ornamental decoration these techniques formed an alternative to the prevailing painting of walls. Of late there has been an unmistakable growing interest in this old technique. The technical procedure is relatively simple, and the procedures are similar to the painting of frescoes.
