Driving from here to there in Bryce National Park, we ran across some pronghorn antelope grazing in the meadow on the side of the road. Not knowing much about western animals, from afar I thought I was seeing deer! But after looking through my telephoto lens, I realized they were not. Wikipedia says they are not really an antelope although they are commonly called such. Their closest relatives are the giraffe and okapi! Pronghorns have distinct white fur on their rumps, sides, breasts, bellies, and across their throats. They looked peaceful and mellow enough in the bucolic meadow but it turns out they are the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. Lucky for us, they just stayed in place so that we could photograph them!
