Description
The blue hour in Cordoba Spain brings out the beauty of the Puente Romano (Roman Bridge) and the Mezquita-Cathedral complex and hides the incongruities of many centuries of reconstructions. The Puente Romano was built by the Romans in the early 1st century BCE, perhaps replacing a previous wooden bridge. The Via Augusta, which connected Rome to Cádiz, most likely passed through it. During the early Islamic domination occurring around the 8th century, the Arab governor general ordered a bridge to be built on the ruins of the old Roman construction. After this it had 16 arcades, one less than originally, and a total length of 247 meters. There was further reconstruction in the Middle Ages, and most recently extensive restoration in 2006. Only two of the arches are original. But who’s paying attention to all that when darkness begins to fall and the lights come on, giving the bridge, and the Mezquita-Cathedral complex in the background, a beautiful glow. You can still imagine it was all built by the Romans.
