Description
I was determined one day to seek out some places that I hadn't seen in Madrid Spain and my walk too me to the Puerta de Toledo in the southwestern part of the city. It is not far from the city center but it seems miles off the beaten track for tourists. No one else in the area seemed to be toting a camera! This free-standing gate is 19 metres high and is comprised of three archways. The central arch is the tallest. It has a rounded semicircular arch and was the main gateway on the road towards the city of Toledo in past centuries. It is flanked by two smaller square lintelled gateways that have ornamental columns on either side. The impressive granite construction was started in 1812 under the orders of Joseph Bonaparte. One year later, after the withdrawal of the French troops from Spain, the project continued and Puerta de Toledo became the site to receive Fernando VII, as represented on one of the friezes. It was finally completed in 1827. Even at nearly 2 centuries old, it is the most recent monumental gate build in Madrid. It was declared a Spanish Property of Cultural Interest in 1996.

Nice shot of an impressive "statement" piece of architecture - though what that statement is, is open to interpretation! :-)
