Description
As is true of many ancient monuments, Puerta del Puente in Cordoba Spain has had a varied history! Although it said to be ancient, it likely looks nothing like the original, which was constructed in Roman times. At that time, Cordoba was a walled city and where this monument is today was originally just an access point/door. Little is known about that door, except it was topped by a statue, likely representing a Roman deity and likely Venus. At the time of Arab domination, it was the main gate of the city and known under various names such as (in English) Gate of the Bridge, Gate of the River, Gate of the Statue and Gate of Algeciras. In the 16th century, an important remodeling took place due to a visit by King Felipe II. In 1912, under the reign of Alfonso XIII, the area in which the Puerta del Puente is located was separated from the city walls and the arch rebuilt as a memorial gate. In the late 1950s all the land bordering the arch was leveled until the original ground level was restored. In the 21st century restorations and archeologic excavations around this monument continue. As a result of all these changes, the Puerta del Puente lost its original function as a true gateway to the city but still stands as a standalone memorial arch.
