Description

Many photos of the three-tiered Purakaunui Falls in the Catlins area of New Zealand show a more delicate wispy flow. However, we visited about a week after flooding rains in the region so it was more rain-swollen. According to at least one writer, Purakaunui Falls is the most photogenic of the Catlins waterfalls. Its proximity to the road (about a 10-minute easy walk) probably contributes to its also being one of the most-photographed of Otago’s sights. Purakaunui Falls is one of the few South Island waterfalls away from the alpine region, located on the Southern Scenic Route between Papatowai and Owaka.
