There is nothing about the four fountains at the intersection of Via delle Quattro Fontane and Via del Quirinale in Rome Italy to make photographing them easy! The fountains are quite large so you need to back up….but since the sidewalks at their base are barely wide enough for two people to pass, backing up means moving across the street. But there is hardly a time when vehicles aren’t moving through the very busy intersection. When the light changes, you need to wait for the pedestrians to finish crossing. And while you are waiting, you are blocking the oh-so-narrow sidewalk. So you need to be ready for that split second of opportunity, which can take a half dozen light changes! If you want to photograph the other three fountains, be prepared to start the process all over again! The complex of the Four Fountains was built under the pontificate of Sixtus V (1585-1590). The fountains were made at the expense of the owners of the neighboring lands in exchange for free water concessions. Erected in the characteristic wall type, the fountains consist of a semicircular travertine basin leaning against a niche that encloses a figure portrayed lying on its side in front of marshy backgrounds. Each corner of the intersection has a different sculpture. This fountain with the river god with cornucopia and Capitoline she-wolf is thought to represent the river Tiber. One website states that the elaborate stucco tree was a later addition to the fountain, added as a reminder of gardens which once stood behind the fountains. The she-wolf statue was supposedly added in the 20th century. As in all things Roman, change is a constant!
