While searching around for some ideas for day trips from Lucca Italy, I ran across Montecatini. There was a reference to Montecatini Alto, a walled city high up on a mountain with a funicular to get there. And less than an hour by train from Lucca. Sounded like exactly the ticket. Of course, I did read that the funicular wasn’t running until April (and it was March 22) so I ended up taking Mr Toad’s Wild Ride on the bus up to the town. MONTECATINI ALTO (high) is the original Montecatini village, lying a few hundred meters above the 'new' town of Montecatini Terme where the thermal baths are located. Montecatini Alto is a characteristic medieval walled village and is one of the most ancient inhabited centers in the area. It has been inhabited by the Ligurians, Etruscans, Romans and Longobards and was always of strategic importance because it sits on a hill dominating the important roads of communication. Today it has lost its strategic function and is visited by tourists looking to soak in some history, wander the quiet lanes, and relax in a small charming town square.
