Don’t let the umbrellas and the heavy fog fool you. You only have to check out the blue sky to see that it’s a lovely day at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain. The fog is Fujiko Nakaya’s ‘fog sculpture’ commissioned specially for the artificial lake at the museum. It acquires it’s changing form depending on the changes in wind and temperature throughout the day. A new fog sculpture occurs hourly for 5 minutes or so. On this particular afternoon, I was having a beer in a nearby café when the hourly display began. I quickly finished the beer and ran over to catch the last couple of minutes of the display! In the background is The Red Arches, a great red gate by Daniel Buren that is incorporated into La Salve Bridge. Its inauguration in 2007 coincided with the Museum’s 10th anniversary. This work creates a central circle that circumscribes the road. The surface is red, while the outer edges of the piece and the inside of the arches have alternate black and white vertical stripes. These edges are made from a translucent material, enabling the integration of plays of light at night. The structure of the artwork was mean to cover the bridge’s original iron arch which the artist said ‘had no visual connection with the elegance of the Museum’.
