This roadrunner is looking pretty self-satisfied. He must have fooled the coyote again. Crazy but true, there is actually a debate as to whether the roadrunner of cartoon fame said ‘beep beep’ or ‘meep meep’ or even "hmeep hmeep" or "mweep, mweep". Regardless, I was excited to see my very first roadrunner and too excited to hear what it was he said! The roadrunner is known for its zygodactyl feet, meaning it has two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backward. When viewing the tracks it is difficult to determine which direction the bird is going. Native Americans considered this bird to be very spiritual and placed its tracks around the house of a deceased person. This was supposed to confuse the evil spirits as to which direction the spirit of the dead had taken. Roadrunners can’t fly very well, but can run fast, up to 20 mph and perhaps as fast as 27 mph.
