Description
In 2016 we were disappointed to have a trip to the Rob Roy glacier (near Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand) cancelled. It was difficult to appreciate, sitting 54 km away in Wanaka, why it was cancelled. But on a return trip in 2017 we were able to understand. 54 km away in New Zealand can be a world away in weather. Then, the last 30 km of the trip are on unsealed roads and the last 10 km are subject to washouts and flooded creeks. You’d better have a 4WD! However, the drive is probably the most difficult part, as the hike is one of the most popular in the area. It’s 10 km return and advertised as a 3.5 – 4 hr hike but if you stop for photos…and stop for photos…..and stop for photos….it easily takes much longer! This scene is at ‘the end of the road’ where everyone stops for lunch, relaxation, and enjoyment of the view. The Rob Roy Glacier is a small hanging glacier in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island. It is located within the Mount Aspiring National Park. Mt Aspiring National Park is part of the Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
