Description
Hiking to Rob Roy Glacier near Wanaka New Zealand is one beautiful scene after another. After crossing some farmland and a swing bridge over the Matukituki River, you climb steadily through the forested gorge of Rob Roy Stream. You know some beautiful sights are ahead, yet it is difficult not to continually stop along the way for photos. The Rob Roy Valley is in Mount Aspiring National Park, which straddles the great divide of the Southern Alps in the southwest corner of the south island of New Zealand. The Rob Roy Glacier Track is one of Mount Aspiring National Park's most outstanding day-hikes. A relatively short and well-kept path leads high into the Rob Roy Basin, where a hanging glacier drapes the mountain walls and sends cascades of water down in all directions. The walk is beautiful the entire way, and the payoff view at the end is simply stunning. The park forms part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage site.
