Description

It’s easy to see the effects of wind and water erosion in a rock wall face as you hike through the slot canyons of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque NM. The structures here formed as a result of volcanic eruptions that occurred between six and seven million years ago. The eruptions left a layered field of sandstone, pumice, ash, and tuff over 1,000 feet thick. The rock formations seen today evolved as a result of differential erosion of the different layers. The overlying layer of sandstone was more resistant to erosion, so that residual pieces of sandstone formed caprocks over the erosional cones and pedestal rocks and provided some protection from further erosion. Eventually the capstones were (and continue to be) undermined by erosion, toppling the capstone and exposing the cone underneath to more rapid (geologically-speaking) erosion. This park used to be a little-known BLM site but has become a very popular hiking location since becoming a National Monument in 2001.
