Description
The Acueducto de los Milagros (English: Miraculous Aqueduct) are the ruins of a Roman aqueduct bridge built to supply water to the Roman colony of Emerita Augusta, today Mérida, Spain. The aqueduct was one of three built at Mérida and thought to have been constructed during the 1st century CE. The part that remains consists of 38 arched pillars standing 25 metres (82 ft) high along a course of 830 metres (2,720 ft). The aqueduct is preserved as part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the background is a small Roman bridge called Puente de Albarregas that runs parallel to the arcades. This bridge was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (a category of heritage register in Spain) in 1912. Aside from the archeological/historical significance of the site, an outstanding characteristic of the aqueduct is the colony of nesting storks seen atop many of the pillars!
