Description
As in many places in southern Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea, Cordoba has its reminder of when this area was part of the Roman Empire. For Cordoba, it is the remains of a Roman temple (Templo Romano) which were discovered during excavations for the town hall. The temple construction began during the reign of Emperor Claudius (41-54 AD), ended about forty years later during the reign of Emperor Domitian (81-96 CE), and was dedicated to the cult of the emperor. Its size was about 32m long and 16m wide. The building was situated on a podium and consisted of six columns on its front facade and ten columns on each side. It was made almost exclusively of marble and the quality of marble and the size of the temple reveal that its construction was carried out by skilled craftsmen of high quality. Currently, the only original remains are its foundation, the stairs, the altar and some shafts of columns and capitals. Much of the rest is reconstructed.
