Description
One thing that is so striking in Rome is how the oldest of monuments is integrated right into the cityscape, or perhaps it is the other way around! Here you can see the gigantic Coliseum sitting right in the middle of things. That is either a wonderful thing, where you see the city growing organically around the ancient structures, or a bad thing if you expect monuments to be off by themselves isolated from daily life. On my first view I have to admit it was a bit shocking to see the Coliseum so close to roads, cars, and other buildings. But that is also the charm in the end. Also in this photo you can see part of the Roman Forum in the lower right. This view is taken from the top of the Vittorio Emanuelle II monument. You can get good views from the monument for free, but for a fee you can take a lift to the very top 'The Terrace of the Quadrigas' where you can enjoy even more stunning Panoramic views. In my opinion, it's well worth the fee. Especially if you have been in Rome a few days and have been all around the city, it is fun to take in the view and identify all the monuments and sites that you have been to.
