Description
I spied this sign in Vega TX while touring some Route 66 sites in town in a sleet storm. I have not been able to determine much about this sign, whether it is in its original location, whether it had anything to do with a 1937 realignment of Route 66 in Vega, or whether it was recovered from elsewhere and stuck in the ground where I found it! In its heyday in the early to mid 20th century, Route 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Vega was a stopping off point because Dot and Harold Levitt had a store called Vega Zero Lockers where locals could store frozen foods in units called lockers and tourists could stock up on fresh fruits, veggies, lunch meats and canned goods for their trek. Route 66 supported the economies of the communities through which it passed and people doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway. Since the completion of the intersate in the area, this and other remnants of the ‘mother road’ slowly decay.

Nice find! The sign looks the same vintage as the Route 66 sign so perhaps it is the same "vintage" and perhaps the town of Vega wanted a little recognition....Who knows but, you found it and captured it for everyone to see! Well done.
