Description
So many city sites look best at night, and the Rua Agusta Arch in Lisbon Portugal is no exception! The view of it from across the riverside Praca de Comercio (Commerce Square) is fairly unobstructed since most of the activity on the square is around the margins at the cafes. The Rua Augusta Arch was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. The allegorical group at the top represents Glory rewarding Valor and Genius. The four statues over the columns represent Nuno Alvares Pereira ( a general whose decisive role assured Portugal's independence from Castile) and Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal (notable for his swift and competent leadership in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake) on the right, and Vasco da Gama (come on, you know this one) and Viriatus (who resisted Roman expansion into Iberia) on the left. The two recumbent figures represent the rivers Tagus and Douro. Aside from the spectacular nighttime view OF the arch, the next best thing is the spectacular view (day and night) FROM the top of the arch! Only opened since 2013, it's a great place to view the sunset as well as the action on Rua Agusta!
