Description
Sacre Coeur, a symbol of Montmartre and of Paris, sits atop the highest natural point in Paris. The inspiration for Sacre Coeur's design originated in 1870, the day of the proclamation of the Third Republic, when the defeat of French troops during the Franco-Prussian War was attributed to a divine punishment after "a century of moral decline" since the French Revolution. Odd... since in Montmartre it sits amid a neighborhood with such a bohemian past! Nevertheless, if you can avoid the scammers and ignore the massive crowds, you focus on the beauty of the church! That is national saint, Joan of Arc, astride a horse, cast in bronze on the lower right. Fun Fact: Sacre Coeur is built of travertine stone which constantly exudes calcite, ensuring that the basilica remains white even with weathering and pollution.
